Day 27/30 | Diagnosed in 1987 In 1987, ADHD was called POS in Switzerland. It meant one thing only: pathology. I had to carve out my own semblance of a functioning life and wish more people understood what that was like. We are privileged now to have knowledge and reduced stigma. Not every psychological condition has had the same progress. And just because I talk about ADHD on the internet, I would like there to be more reflection when commenting or giving advice, especially if you’ve been recently diagnosed. I know it feels shiny and new when you finally have all the hacks to make your brain work. That doesn’t mean others haven’t already been living with this for decades. The fact that people can make money creating content or coaching with ADHD now is an unbelievable privilege. I would like us to remember that and help other conditions gain the same visibility and support. Alright, rant over! Here are a few cognitive + identity impacts of carrying a 1987 ADHD diagnosis for nearly four decades. Chat, take it away: 1. Early Framing In the 80s, ADHD was only deficit. Kids often internalized “I am wrong” instead of “my brain works differently.” 2. Hyperawareness Knowing you’re “not like others” makes you self-observant. That can build adaptability but also fuel doubt. 3. Shifting Narratives 80s/90s: misbehavior. 2000s: meds + stigma. 2010s–2020s: difference, creativity, community. Each shift forces identity renegotiation. 4. Coping as Framework Strategies — systems, hyper-organization, or avoidance — eventually define how you think and act. 5. Long-Term Self-Trust Decades of ADHD lens create both clarity about rhythms and deep questioning of capacity. 6. Wisdom in the Arc From stigma to acceptance builds resilience. You learn to hold nuance: challenges (executive dysfunction, overwhelm) and gifts (creativity, intensity, divergent thinking). #30DaysVisible #MentalHealth #ADHD #cPTSD #300Days
