Hi, native Hawaiian born and raised here on Oahu. The way they went from “Ohana means family” in the original to “Ohana means nothing” in this remake not only broke me, but disrespected our culture immensely. Shame on Disney, and the film’s director.

I saw it in a more innocent way. Her sister knew her parents had a dream for her and she was giving it up to take care of her. Once she was safe across the street she wanted her to fulfill her parents’ wish. Think of the story being told through a child’s eyes.

My entire family has agreed (both sides of the political spectrum and even my radical family members) that this movie was a complete insult and ruined the meaning of the original movie. It was just a cash grab with propaganda to help big corporations buy out land in Hawaii.

the new live vers ion missed 2 crucial points. Family is everything in our culture. In an actual Hawaiian ohana, Nani would have helped her kiddo sis, and raised her, because Ohana means, Noone left behind. The other point is, did you know as Kanaka 'owiwi we get free education? This means She could have stayed and became a marine biologist IN HAWAI'I...FOR FREE! This new version of Lilo and Stitch is clearly whitewashed.
