Japan has hunted whales for centuries. After the IWC banned commercial whaling in 1986, Japan continued under a “scientific research” loophole. In 2019, it left the IWC and resumed commercial whaling in its own waters. Japan has a long history of whaling, with the practice dating back centuries and becoming especially prominent after World War II when whale meat was a key food source. Despite the International Whaling Commission’s 1986 ban on commercial whaling, Japan continued hunting whales under a “scientific research” loophole until it withdrew from the IWC in 2019 and resumed full-scale commercial whaling in its territorial waters. Anti-whaling groups like Sea Shepherd and Greenpeace have opposed Japan’s whaling operations for years, often clashing with vessels at sea. One of the most notable incidents occurred in 2010 when New Zealand activist Peter Bethune, a Sea Shepherd member, boarded the Japanese whaling ship Shonan Maru 2 in Antarctic waters to perform a citizen’s arrest for allegedly ramming and sinking Sea Shepherd’s boat, the Ady Gil. Bethune was arrested by the crew, taken to Japan, and charged with multiple offenses including trespassing and assault. He received a suspended two-year sentence and was deported, drawing global attention to the conflict between conservationists and Japan’s whaling industry. #whaling #ocean #marinelife #whale
