Field Notes – Entry #209 Location: Courtyard of the Lower Garden Market, midday, near the fountain Species: Floricicada mirabilis I first spotted it resting lightly on the sleeve of a vendor's jacket—at a glance, it resembled nothing more than a small cicada, its back layered in soft greens and muted rose. The wings were closed tightly over the body, and their texture bore the subtle veining and padding of unbloomed petals. Only when it was transferred carefully onto my hand did it begin to change. The layers on its back quivered once, and with a surprising fluidity, the outer casing peeled back—not in flight, but in bloom. A full flower emerged from its back, unfurling in delicate spirals: pale pink petals cupping a tight, golden heart. It was neither insect nor blossom in that moment, but something perfect between. The creature remained placid, legs gently gripping the fingertip, antennae softly vibrating as if sensing the surrounding murmur of people and clinking glasses. The bloom did not last long. Within minutes, the petals softened and folded back into their original bud shape, the creature resuming its sleepy cicada disguise. They call it Floricicada mirabilis, and among the older gardeners there is a saying:

Whether that means rain, sun, or simple luck, no one is quite sure. .
