BEAST GAMES 02: LIFE IS FUN! [6:32] Who said religious people can’t have fun? That we can’t enjoy this dunya? For many, faith often feels restrictive — traumatic memories of lessons at the masjid. But Allah ﷻ says: وَمَا الْحَيَاةُ الدُّنْيَا إِلَّا لَعِبٌ وَلَهْوٌ “This worldly life is nothing but play and amusement.” [6:32] Many cite this as proof the dunya is worthless. But pause; does Allah ﷻ ever create things intrinsically evil? Never. Everything He ﷻ creates is good with the capacity for sin; and we’re the ones who twist it. He states: وَهَدَيْنَاهُ النَّجْدَيْنِ “We showed them the two ways — of right and wrong.” [Al-Balad 90:10] A knife can cook or kill. The object isn’t the problem — the choice is. So when Allah ﷻ calls life play and amusement, He’s not condemning it — He’s defining it. He’s showing its function. The goodness of dunya lies in that play and amusement — not beyond it. We tell our kids, “Stop playing and start studying.” Maybe Allah ﷻ tells us: Play — but consciously. Play isn’t the opposite of worship; it facilitates it. Play with Allah ﷻ in your heart — that’s worship. Joy that remembers Him — gratitude. Laughter that lifts others — sadaqah. Allah ﷻ is very deliberate with the words He chose. He didn’t call this life a “test” (إمتحان) like we do. Instead, He said (لعب) a game; a word that carries the meaning of test but with fun. You play a game to win, but have fun along the way. Yes there’s struggle, but that’s the thrill. You’ll lose at times — but you “respawn” through tawbah and continue. This game is from the Most Merciful ﷻ — He wants you to win and enjoy it. Even distraction (lahw) can serve good. Distractions are decoys — just like when your child hurts themselves, you distract them so they forget their pain. The distraction of the dunya can bring you back to your purpose or away from it. Allah ﷻ teaches us to ask: رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِى ٱلْـَٔاخِرَةِ حَسَنَةًۭ “Our Lord, grant us goodness in this life and in the next.” [2:201] If dunya were meant for misery, why ask for its goodness? Look at the Prophet ﷺ life — he smiled, laughed, raced, played; enjoyed food, friendship, beauty — yet his heart was always connected to Allah ﷻ. Look how he ﷺ talked about lust, one of the greatest pleasures of this world: “When a man is intimate with his wife, he is rewarded.” Why? If done in ḥarām he’d be punished — so in ḥalāl, he’s rewarded. He didn’t forbid it; he redirected it. The act didn’t change — the intention did. Maybe the problem isn’t enjoying the dunya… it’s doing it heedlessly. Have fun. Smile. Travel. Create. Do what you love — for the One you love. Because Allah ﷻ never forbade pleasure; He only asked us to remember Him while we enjoy it. #LifeIsFun #BeastGames #DunyaExplained #IslamicReflections #EnjoyTheDunya
