@markhmendez: Egon F. J. Winkens, Architect Gaspard House, 1966 A quiet study in organic modernism, the Gaspard House in Mt. Washington reveals its architectural complexity not to the street, but to the landscape it embraces. Designed one of architect Richard Neutra's partners in the 1960s, the home exemplifies the mid-century commitment to structure-as-design, and honesty of materials. From the street, its presence is restrained: exposed structure, vertical board and batten, and a glass wall facing Moon Canyon. But move around to the side, and the house unfurls—a dynamic L-shaped composition wrapped around a swimming pool, with deep eaves, a variegated façade, and folded-plane roof forms shading 2-story glass volumes. A cantilevered wood trellis reaches out to the street, drawing visitors in to the front entrance. Inside, several zones define varying degrees of privacy, depending upon the function. Bedrooms align on the second floor, with dining room, family room, and homemaker's command center off the kitchen down below. The "Dragon's Tooth", both art gallery and hallway, paved in vibrant green terrazzo, connects to the enormous living room at the opposite end of the house. The double-height living room frames views to the Pacific Ocean, dissolving the boundary between indoors and out. Exposed post-and-beam construction, clerestory windows, and striated shadows cast by sunlit rafters create a space that feels both rigorously modern and deeply connected to nature. The pièce de resistance is a sunken conversation pit, surrounded by lime green shag carpet, facing a wood-burning fireplace clad in Hawaiian lava rock. Photographed by Julius Shulman in 1968, the house remains a case study in site-specific design, where architecture and landscape are in constant dialogue. 3 BD, 5 BA 3,685 SF 21,607 SF Lot NOT FOR SALE This reel is a collaborative effort by Brian Linder, AlA (The Value Of Architecture) and Mark H.
