Diesel mechanic here. We have fuel gauges on every locomotive. They even have an online service where any TrainMaster can look up fuel levels in real time from their phone or computer. They even have alerts set up that if the fuel level is low it sends an email. And yet I still get dozens of units in our shop every year that ran out of fuel on the mainline.

We had one get 2000 instead of 4500, ran out across the middle of Kansas, lemme tell you… the 6 million dollar lawsuit that followed for the delays was a headache.

From my experience crew is always last to know. How do I know 2 hours ahead of time to pick them up and they know 5 minutes before they stop. 😁😂😂

This is why electric trains are a blessing. I never have to worry about fuel. In my country diesels are mostly for shunting, but some bigger models still run freight. I hate driving them though
