Facial reconstruction of a 28,000-year-old man from France In 1868, during railway construction through the Vézère Valley near the village of Les Eyzies, part of a rock overhang was destroyed, exposing, though also partially damaging, a prehistoric rock shelter now known as Cro-Magnon. As the site was being cleared, numerous tools and ornaments were discovered, along with the skeletal remains of five individuals. These remains included an elderly man, two adult males, a woman, and a younger individual. The skeletons were covered by layers of sediment that had accumulated from the cave ceiling over time and were found lying directly atop a cultural layer rich in fauna remains. The animal bones were dominated by horse, reindeer (both red and northern types), ground squirrel, and to a lesser extent, bison and aurochs. Originally, the archaeological layer was thought to belong to the Aurignacian period. However, more recent assessments suggest a more accurate attribution to the early Gravettian period. Close to the skeletons, over 300 pierced marine shells, mostly from Littorina littorea, were recovered, likely used as personal ornaments. Additional finds included pendants made from bison teeth, a drilled deer antler, and an ivory plaque with two perforations. One of the adult males, now known as Cro-Magnon 1, stood out for his exceptionally large and robust skull, measuring 200 mm in length and 150 mm in width. #phenotype #ancientdna #anthropology #skull #huntergathererskull #gravettian
