Did a presentation in A&P school on the f-14 for our powerplant class. I used this exact video for showing the one of the many reasons that the have upgraded the f-14 to the B variant. The Pratt and Whitney power plant of the A model had a tendency to really bad compressor stall which is what top gun hints towards with when one of the engines compressor stalls and flames out and they enter a flat spin.The Pratt and Whitney engines had a rare but catastrophic failure point in the compressor sections coming apart and exiting the engine casing which is what I think happened here. To build on the pilots from this video they both lived but with severe burns and I believe this might have been a career ending accident.

The JPJ is a navy destroyer. But the f14 A had the PW engines that were terrible with compressor stalls. Had nothing to do with the g limit of the airframe

insanely violent compressor stall that led to the compressor blading to haircut releasing all the airfoils simultaneously, the reaction torque this exerts on the casings twisted the engine free of it's mounts and fuel shear lines dumping sharapnel everywhere causing the engine to explode
