Replying to @feralforaging It’s difficult to encompass how many wins come from foraging for acorns. The first that comes to mind is that it is incredibly sustainable. Where many foods we buy from the grocery store require large amounts of fossil fuels to grow, process, and transport, acorns offer us an alternative. This wild food is local, abundant, and nutritious! In mast years oaks drop more acorns than wildlife are able to deal with. A forager can gather these acorns from oaks and process them into flour to be used for all kinds of dishes. Every calorie that you consume from acorns that came from your local ecology is a calorie that you don’t have to purchase from industrial agriculture. Acorn foragers are some of the strongest advocates and supporters of oaks, a vital ecological tree that supports numerous species where it is found. At a time when we are losing oaks at a record rate due to habitat loss and displacement in favor of cheap “fast-growing” trees, we could use more allies of oaks. I think we need more acornivores so I am making a whole series devoted to foraging, processing, and eating acorns! There is only one drawback to acorns that I can think of and it’s that they contain tannins which must be leached before they are consumed (otherwise they would be bitter and not very good for you). No fear, though! In the Acorn Series, I’m going to show you every single step of the process of bringing acorns from oak to the table! I sincerely hope that you will join me on this journey! #foraging #acorns #wildfood #wildfoodlove #acornseries22 #foragingtiktok
