@navigatepsychology: Why doesn’t your psychologist just tell you what to do and be done with it? A very understandable question! Tiktok disclaimer: This video advice is general in nature and does not replace your doctor or your therapist. #privatepractice #psychologist #sydneypsychologist #psychologystudent
At what point do you think it becomes an ethics issue in not being direct with a client about strategies that could help and watching repeated maladaptive cycles? Particularly when we consider the steep financial burden of accessing a psychologist?

I love discovering the aha moments for myself, and being asked questions to unpack. Being told what to do usually bothers me so much bc I either already know what to do or I’m being told what to do based on the other person’s model of the world. —- as a coach I usually ask my client if they want suggestions , but more often than not I ask questions that help them to make the subconscious jumps.

I find it SO INFURIATING, every psych spends a year learning who I am, my problems and then sends me away with zero guidance when I explicitly say I need to be told what to do.

I was told numerous times through many years of training to almost never simply give advice or tell a client what to do - because they won’t take personal ownership of that action. Without all the steps leading to the choice, it isn’t really theirs

You WILL NEVER LEARN if you don’t find the answers/get the answers yourself that’s why the professionals lead you there they are a guide. It’s imperative you answer yourself.

expect from that , we really need to understand and evaluate the person really well first in order to do that , find the reasons behind and give customizing advice 🥰

I put together a pdf file of my family tree and timeline of my life. She said she didn’t want to see it. We then spent three sessions going over my family tree and timeline of life. Hadn’t even brushed on the actual abuse I had experienced

I wasn’t raised by parents so I don’t always understand all the options. I hated talking in circles.. When I figured out that I just wanted simple encouragement & support to go with my decision & solutions to move forward I realized I was talking to the wrong people.

The fact that they need/ want someone to tell them what to do is exactly why they need to learn to make their own choices and to stand by them confidently. We only have one life! It might as well be the one you want to live and to live it for yourself 🌸 it’s the best thing I learnt in therapy!

also, school does not teach you exactly how to be a good person, because our morality is subjective. so it's unethical to decide for a client what must be done. it's more ethical to support a person in discovering what is right for them.

Great insight 👍 Consider seeking a mental health social worker or a counsellor/therapist with that background too! More likely to guide you to relevant techniques and supports that benefit you earlier as opposed to spending $$$ for many months/years until they direct you.

My first two sessions were spent listing off all my family and friends. Only for her to forget I had a boyfriend that I had already listed 🤷🏻♀️I attended two more sessions (thought it might get more constructive) of talking about her dog and patting her dog who was in the office. So I didn’t bother going back for any more, such a waste of money.

I can’t even go through one therapy just venting. I think I’m too practical I’m like what can I do? Tell me or I’m out 😂

If the psychologist is lonely a less structured approach might help get friends. 🌸
