it's interesting that in ww1 and ww2 that the nurses were usually around the ages of 25 - 40. This wasn't obviously all cases but on average they were this age. this is probably the reason why younger soldiers were likely to label the nurses as mothers or motherlike

they had to see the life out of the soldiers eyes leaving while they begged and pleaded calling the young nurses "mom" or holding her hand desperately to not be alone..while the young nurses who were only children too had their hands soaked in blood and watch god take the soul out of a young soldier...
