The biggest factor is, these individuals are not fluent in English and are often lost in routing through the airport. Especially for connecting flights. Asking for a wheelchair ensures the flight personnel safely brings them to their respective gates efficiently. Maybe if the west wasn’t always keen on just one language and provided appropriate support to all likes of passengers then they’d be happy to roam around and explore the airport on their own accord.

In India air travel is not coomon, these old parents have no deviuos motives. They are just scared and with wheelchairs ty have help till they board the plane. Thats just the fact and their kids get peace of mind

my 80yo mother missed her connecting flight once at dubai airport when departing gate was changed to another terminal. she can't read, write english and no international calling facility. since than wheelchair is only option.

I'm not defending this culture as most of what said here is true. My dad had hip replacement so we did use wheelchair services. An onlooker will jump to conclusion why he on wheelchair. Some ppl do really need it but most take advantage

As a cabin crew, i noticed that they will always claimed to be lawyers, doctors, engineers just to get upgraded to business class which will never gonna happen in a million years. LoL

It’s because they don’t speak a lot of English or care to learn how to use the airport even tho they know they traveled so many times out that airport so they take a wheel chair to make sure they get to the gate without inconveniencing themselves but others instead 😒

Ex FA here. They are taking advantage. wheelchair pax board first but disembark last. It’s a miracle every time we landed - all of a sudden they can all walk as soon as they hear they will deplane LAST. Scammers.

ex crew here. my worst flight was wheelchair assistance were around 120. total pax on board 200. That was crazy. yes they get to gates faster with people carrying their very heavy hand carry bags for them. some were legit but most were just taking advantage of it. if they put just $10 fee I bet most will walk easily.

Sadly this is abuse of the system and true! These are the parents visiting their children. They use this route only to avoid inquiries and navigation through airports. Surprisingly Chinese don’t do this even when they have bigger language deficiency.

Indians travel more for family reasons. These are not leisure tourists, they are going to meet their children. The cost of a wheelchair is negligible compared to airline ticket

I have personally been around when many of them have asked for wheelchairs and told the staff that I am too tired to walk or I don't want to walk, being tired doesn't make you disabled or deserving of wheelchair, it's like 50/50 chance that they are just lazy and don't need the wheelchair.

Its not free never free, we all pay extra for this those who push these wheelchairs they charge or asl for money. The only reason its done its because they are more likely to get confused around.. cannot speak fluent english.. have never travelled internationally… they often feel embarrassed to use wheel chair..
