It reminds me of General James Kabarebe the man widely believed to be responsible for the killing of Ugandan soldiers during the Kisangani clashes in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The tragic irony is that many people today view him as innocent, largely because they haven’t taken the time to read history or study the facts.
Kabarebe, then a senior commander in the Rwandan Patriotic Army, is believed to have conspired with President Paul Kagame and President Yoweri Museveni in orchestrating attacks that led to the deaths of over two battalions of Ugandan troops. These soldiers were under the command of the late General James Kazini during the brutal Kisangani confrontations between Uganda and Rwanda in 1999 and 2000 often referred to as "Africa's First World War" due to the involvement of multiple regional powers in the DRC conflict.
It’s my firm belief that this betrayal and massacre of Ugandan troops was the reason why General Kazini was later assassinated. Kazini, a loyal commander, was reportedly determined to seek justice or even revenge for the loss of his men a stance that may have cost him his life.
These events followed escalating tensions between the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and the Rwandan Defence Forces (RDF) over control of Kisangani, a strategic city in northeastern Congo. What began as a partnership between Uganda and Rwanda to overthrow Mobutu’s regime eventually degenerated into deadly confrontations, with devastating consequences for both sides especially the Ugandan forces.
Unfortunately, much of this history remains buried or deliberately ignored. If more people took time to read and understand our past, figures like Kabarebe wouldn’t so easily enjoy the cover of silence.
