My granda is the same he got diagnosed in 2019! Although he could have had it around 2018! 6 years on he is still mobile & can dress himself but if you let him he could wear 3 pairs of socks like he doesn’t fully understand anymore. Very early on he had aphasia which he knew what he wanted to say but couldn’t get the words out & at the start he was frustrated cause he knew but now he doesn’t he talks but it’s no longer coherent & often is a bunch of words but if you know him & care for him like I do ( he lives with us ) we know what he’s saying! It’s slow and his changed personality but thankfully not aggressive towards me but he can be mean & he doesn’t mean to cause he doesn’t understand. My granda however didn’t know me when I was younger (long story) only met him at 12 so he didn’t care or look after me like my other grandparents but I still don’t mind as he was good to me but I only got like 7 years with him before dementia. My granda is my mums father and she only met him that year too she got 7 years with her dad until he slowly went away. My grandas mother died of it too and his brother has it too although his brothers has progressed faster! His brother got diagnosed after my granda and is nearly bed bound & doesn’t eat well. Just shows you how it’s different for everyone!

you really are a rare breed, jess. not a lot of people can do what you do, so often our oldies are brought to a care home and never visited by family, I understand why though. It's so hard watching your own family wither away before your eyes and many people want to remember them only how they were before. it takes a very strong person to stand by their family when going through this and I stand by saying you would be such an amazing carer, more residents deserve amazing family like you. but that's why us carers make them our family, especially when they are without loved ones ❤️
