@Cherryannie: NEVER TOUCH WILD ANIMALS, ESPECIALLY THOSE THAT RELY ON SCENT, such as deer fawns, baby rabbits, and others. This is NOT a myth.
I study nature conservation myself, and I know many people who work in wildlife rescue centers (I’ve even done several internships at such centers).
Deer fawns never stay close to their mother for safety reasons—if they moved together, they would attract more attention from predators, and the young wouldn’t be able to defend itself.
It’s not just deer; many mammals rely heavily on scent (unlike birds, for example, which don’t).
If the mother senses a foreign smell on her baby, she will abandon it—and it won’t survive.
BUT IF YOU DO FIND A YOUNG ANIMAL AND YOU’RE SURE IT’S ABANDONED (but you should still wait a moment), CALL A WILDLIFE RESCUE CENTER AND DO NOT TOUCH IT.
If you’ve already touched it, rub it gently with grass to try to remove your scent.
