or it just has to do with the number of senses being stimulated, more real = more senses

What? There is an objective difference in what is being perceived that’s why they feel differently? Like the sunlight rays are not hitting your skin from the picture…it’s like saying when you eat dog food and home food you claim one is better yet you are simply eating in both cases…

Looking at a picture is laughably different than looking at a real environment. Viewing angle, resolution, brightness, dynamic range, 3D effects including eye accomodation, and motion are all different.

Records don’t compress music as much as CDs, cassettes, or MP3s so there’s something to the music example that complicates it a bit more

What’s funny to me is that one of the most impactful things that we pretend is real is the concept of a country (like Isreal 🤭) especially once you compare the how residents of Israel and occupants of their open air prisons present themselves vs how their country is represented through the filters of the western industrial media apparatus

it is directly related to there being more stimuli to perceive. Watching a sunset has temperature and wind. a picture does not.

Koltraline :
The picture has a layer of abstraction, it’s a flat rectangle which doesn’t bathe you in the orange light of the sunset, you don’t feel the soft warmth of the sun or hear the environment

Nah, I think the issue is often lossy compression which discards a lot of the information that was originally there

for some reason I place more value on "unreal" things, like a photo of a sunset is more interesting than seeing it irl

I am pretty sure that isn’t it I think it’s more the minor errors like with streaming music they perfected it then realesed the file on Spotify the record player has scratcheiness and you put in your own music on and effort in to it but live is more likely to have errors stuttering over drawn etc

I don't think the phenomenon you're describing is why we feel differently about the two, I think it's purely an information scale difference, when you are there in the moment, you see the sunset fully envelop you, your peripheral vision is filled, you feel the breeze on your face, the natural light, the effects of the day up to that point, how you got there, it all builds the experience. Compared to a static image or even a short video on a square device suddenly interrupting your otherwise mundane day, you miss so much extra information.

I don’t think I feel less real or the act of looking at these represented things feels less real but the represented thing you are looking is itself less real therefore doesn’t have the same impact as the real thing
