i have a friend who keeps saying I'm not black because I'm 🇳🇬. but what she fails to understand or acknowledge is that my experience in the US is the same as any other black person here. because honestly let's be real, a racist person isn't going to ask me where I'm from before calling me a slur 💔🥀. because i am black. we all are! and we need eachother now more than ever🙏

Intersectionality is a thing! Wanting more African American representation is important. I say this as a Black Canadian. We need to get better at acknowledging the unique experiences faced by various Black communities through out the diaspora. There are privileges associated being 2nd gen that so many of us minimize. Let’s create space for AA women to self advocate instead of finding fault.

The irony is I’ve seen black Americans question the ethnicity of other black Americans because they, “look too African”. So even if a dark skinned black American woman made beauty videos, would she even be appreciated for representing black American women of her skin tone.

There is space for all of us however, there is absolutely nothing wrong with wanting to see representation from the women with a similar story as you. Those cultural differences inform our thoughts and perception of the world. Yes even something as frivolous as makeup.

Ethnic Black Americans are definitely having a recentering moment. Outsiders are shocked because they’ve always been able to ooze in and out of Black American spaces representation without any much pushback. But really ethnic Black American are really just playing catch up to the ethnocentrism that has always been present in African and Carribean communities.
