@pbsnews: A new study published in JAMA Internal Medicine finds a steep drop in how mothers are rating their mental health. The study’s authors point to several factors that hurt maternal mental health in the last decade, including high child care costs, financial strains and limited access to mental health services. Researchers who analyzed data from the nearly 200,000 mothers who took part in the National Survey of Children’s Health — an annual survey of families with kids under 18 — found about 1 in 20 mothers rated their mental health as poor or fair in 2016. By 2023, that number had worsened to 1 in 12. Last year, former U.S. Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy sounded the alarm on declining mental health among parents, calling many “exhausted, burned out, and perpetually behind.” PBS News is looking to speak with mothers who are willing to be on camera and speak about their mental health.
