Hard disagree, people were a lot poorer in the past no matter how much it’s romanticized. Yes, you could afford a home on a single income, but it was tiny and poorly electrified, cars were more expensive as a percent of income and broke down sooner, vacations were going camping on a road trip not modern day European tours of today. I’ll take being average in 2025 any day.

Even for being great the pay out is marginal not even as good. I have my own house at 23 and a girl I was talking to said “well that’s ok, but why didn’t you get like an apartment downtown?” Men cannot win. What so ever.

For the last 45 years, the number of hours it takes the median wage earner to pay the mortgage on the median priced house has been decreasing. It’s because mortgage rates even now are so much lower, plus downpayment has consistently been decreasing.

50 years ago the average person could afford a house and support their family comfortably because our economy was based on exporting things which we manufactured. The loss of manufacturing jobs to china and the subsequent college push in the 80s led to the overinflation of college degrees in the market. For a while this was beneficial because we were able to transition to a kind of managerial position in the world economy (which we still hold today) and the middle class of white collar America was officially born. Unfortunately, the rate of profit is negative and over time the money coming in from cheap Chinese manufacturing started to dry up as the Chinese, and broader SE Asia in general, gained more economic leverage. But thankfully the tech boom happened right about the time traditional extractive methods began to become unable to sustain the American consumer’s extra income. (Which is the driver of the whole

We also live in excess people just don’t notice look at the size of the average home in the 50s suburbs lol look they didn’t eat out everyday the vacations where by car not air lucary iteans were rare old tech no new iPhone lol modern day conveniences are crazy we do live better even as average
