as a Filipino, it always amazes me how we just instinctively know how to use each of these words, even though most of these conjugations weren't formally taught in school.

Hello, I am a Linguistics student at the University of the Philippines Diliman. May I ask the name of the speaker so that I can browse if he has significant studies regarding my paper? Thank you.

i feel bad for filipinos who weren't taught tagalog or lived in an english-speaking household. tagalog is just one of those languages that you can only be fluent in through enculturation

This is just one of many reasons why the Filipino language is far more complex and interesting to learn.

yes I agree. but it also makes Tagalog/Filipino an inefficient language with all the variations to express a thought. Also try translating an English scientific abstract into Tagalog. There are no equivalents simply because Tagalog lacks the ability to create new words from base words even within the same language. Just listen to tagalog speeches of our law makers. A lot of sentences to convey a message but in English would just be a sentence or two.I love our heritage but we should accept the limits of our vernacular.

i have a friend who grew up in the states and then they moved back to manila for a while. i was trying to teach her tagalog. but it’s so hard to teach. native speakers just do it naturally but it’s so confusing for non peakers

correct me if i'm wrong, but this is for tagalog mostly? because for example bisaya people will simply use "mag" or "nag" prefix instead when speaking tagalog as 2nd language
