The Māori word for autism is "takiwātanga". It is derived from the phrase "tōku/tōna anō takiwā", which translates to "my/his/her own time and space’. And that is so beautiful to me. My son and I are autistic/adhd and their word describes it perfectly.

In Igbo (🇳🇬) ahuru m gi n’anya doesn’t mean “I love you” like the English translated it to. I means “I see you with my eyes”. I find that so beautiful, so tactile, so raw & intimate. Love is not blind in our language.

I love this topic so much. In yòrùbá (West Africa), when a woman has given birth, the customary greeting is "e kú ewu omo", which when translated (inexact) means "congratulations on dwelling with and escaping the dangers of childbirth".

In polish the word „child” (polish: dziecko) has no gender (the indicative of genderless nouns is a letter “o” at the end of the word) I think it’s a beautiful reflection of tribal wisdom

In our African languages, we have no words for “the devil” so I suppose we didn’t view good and evil as a two-sides each with its own mascot. The introduction of colonial tongues brought things we don’t understand to this day.

I may be spelling this incorrectly: the Aniishnaabe word Mindemoyen - translated by British as “old woman” or “grandmother” actual means “Woman who brings us all together”. ❤️

Hiraeth is a welsh word which in simple terms might translate to mean a deep longing for a place or a person. But at its core, hiraeth is an awareness of the presence of absence, kindling a feeling in which pain and joy are braided too tightly to untangle. I love this! We are relational and empire thrives on our alienation. In Hawaiian, you don’t call yourself your pet’s owner. You are their Kahu (ka – hoo). Kahu has many meanings: Guardian, protector, steward, beloved, and attendant. Someone entrusted. With the safekeeping of something precious, something cherished.

We Maori believe everything is a living entity. Our colonising government has finally recognised at least one Maunga(mountain) and one awa(river) to have legal personhood. Which means these have all the rights and privileges of a human person. They can be represented in court etc by at least 2 people. This is huge for pakeha people here.

Thai has a lot of words that use their word for heart to convey emotions that English needs phrases to communicate. My favorite was one that translated to “weak heart” that was used for feelings of not wanting to impose or press too much on another out of respect.

In most South African languages, we have different names for our parents siblings, they are not just aunty and uncle, it is very important to take notice of them as they are supposed to play different roles in our lives E.g. Mmamogolo, Mamkhulu for my sister's older sis, an older mom, meaning she plays the same role as my mom, should I loose my mom, I'm not an orphan If I have an oldee mom, of younger mom(Mmane, Mamncane)
