So basically L tested light to see if he would mention the idea of 4 photographs because the sentence was incomplete, but Light still went with it, therefore making him look suspicious.

This was one of my most HATED scenes Because I always thought L was just “hurr dur you didn’t assume there was a fourth one even though theres no reason for one” but this makes SO MUCH more sense

a scene that confused me way more is when light explains that his name is written with the kanji for moon 月 and god 神。i initially started to learn japanese, seriously, just to understand how that makes sense. only to realize that is simply doesnt. its just a thing in japanese culture where parents sometimes pick cool looking kanji and tell you to read them in an unorthodox way. Its as if i said my name Melanie is written in cool looking emoji 🍒🕸️🔥 but pronounced Melanie. ffs.

So in other words, L takes a message from Kira, adds a fake addendum, and then numbers them falsely so that only someone who knows the original message would order them correctly in spite of the fake order, therefore tricking Light, who jumps the gun?

I’m kinda confused on how this was condemning or would point towards Kira in general tho, like the sentence Kira arranged it to was still a complete sentence even if it didn’t make sense based in reality it was still a sentence someone could conceive, any human would order it that way before asking if there were more pieces. It’s like “1 did you know, 2 Superman hates, 3 water” and then introducing an addition to what is already a complete sentence like “4 when he’s not thirsty”

It’s less that they “butchered” it and more so that they gave the best approximation of the intent of the scene. Like, I appreciate the explanation, but localization is never a 1-to-1 translation, it always takes liberties for clarity.

Light had no reason to suspect a missing note. The sentence given to him works. There is no reason to assume L would not give him a "missing message"

without the context of watching the show, the sentence order 1,2,3 is correct in japanese grammar. it’s not uncommon for the subject to be placed at the end of a sentence. the same is true in english. it’s an antiquated speaking style, but an example would be, “they love playing outside, my kids.” or “such interesting animals to study, elephants.”
