Today marks the 35th anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act. It’s one of the most important civil rights laws in our country’s history, and one that affects our daily life more than most people realize. As a lot of you know, my husband, John, is blind. He lost his sight at 16. And today, he’s a skilled woodworker. He uses tactile tools, systems, and muscle memory to create beautiful things with his hands. Not to mention the woodworking class for the blind where he learned his craft. He’s not looking for pity or praise, just the space and tools to do what he loves. That’s what the ADA helps provide. It’s not about special treatment. It’s about basic access, things like curb cuts, audio signals at crosswalks, screen readers for technology, education, and public spaces that are safe and usable for everyone. The ADA doesn’t give John his talent or drive, those are his. But it helps clear a path so that those qualities can shine. Disability is more common than most people think. It can happen at birth, or suddenly, or over time. Most of us, if we live long enough, will experience some kind of disability in our lives. And when we do, we’ll want a society that’s built with us in mind. We’re grateful for the people who made this law possible, (including hardworking disabled advocates) and for those who continue to make sure it’s respected and enforced. The ADA doesn’t solve everything. But it’s a step toward a country that works better for all of us. And that’s worth honoring. Photo descriptions: Two photos show John standing in the forest holding his white cane. John in the wood shop using a screwdriver on a project. John standing on the beach smiling and walking with his white cane. #ADA
