@cambridgeuniversity: Did you miss the Vice Chancellor's Dialogues event on the limits of free speech? This event was part of a series encouraging ‘disagreeing well’ and exploring perspectives on the most difficult issues of our time. Watch the full event now on YouTube https://youtu.be/1WKP0kV2f58
It comes from communism and authoritarianism. It's a way for people to control others. Free speech is free speech and should NEVER be controlled.

This video being my only context to this particular discussion, it's so refreshing to hear someone actually address the purpose of hate speech laws instead of constantly focusing on the 'woe is me, I can't use slurs without being cancelled' angle 😊

harm is a terrible criterion too. do you include non-bodily harm? mental harm? emotional harm? the left constantly want it. without a proper definition of harm, it's indefensible.

Allowing society to regulate itself via unadulterated free speech is the only way to achieve long term sustainable harmony - there’ll be bumps along the way but it’ll be worth it

Total mid characterisation of America here. Although America does not have “hate speech” laws it isn’t a free for all with no rules. You’re not allowed to incite violence towards people which is where US draws the line.

The American approach is better than locking up people for Facebook posts like it’s the GDR or the Soviet Union

How is he defining "Harm" hurt feelings? He says harm but its just a more likable way of saying offended. Nobody is "harmed" by words. Sticks and stones... We have laws that criminalise harm already.

Harm is not a defensible criteria. And I don’t see how it’s much different than offense.

Ignorance is the greater crime. Fear that people can be indoctrinated derives from poor education - so improve education thus giving all the tools they need to recognise hate speeches for what they are.

Restricting speech also produces harm. And if it is simply up for a person to say your speech has harmed me then it is easily weaponised.
