at the time, our culture was not as saturated with true crime stories, so people were more likely to try and rationalize seeing weird things. maybe they thought Carmen was trying to run away from her family, or something along those lines. doesn't make it ok obviously, but I think it's likely a reason like that compared to people just being heartless.
