I am also a cyber security expert. The concern is irrational. The entire port would have to be replaced by the wrongdoer. Highly unlikely that someone can replace a port in an electrical outlet in an airport without being seen

the only to "hack" a usb port is you would have to remove it from the wall and connect a device behind it, then put it back, surely someone is going to notice especially in an airport

Completely untrue. Apple should sue them for it tbh. The reality is that any non manufacturer USB pops up a message on iOS saying ‘Allow this device to access’. So no nobody would be compromised
