@drjoe_md: If you've ever felt tired, foggy, or headachy after an hour or two in the car with the button on, it might be because you've been breathing your own CO, the whole time. Yes, most modern cars don’t completely seal off your car from outside air with the recirculation button, but CO2 can still accumulate according to multiple studies. The fear would be this could cause you to lose focus and get into an accident. Here's how to stay safe on long drives: • Switch to fresh air mode every 20-30 minutes • Crack a window, even slightly • Avoid using recirculate for more than an hour straight • Be extra cautious if you have multiple passengers 1. As a mechanic this is entirely false. All air vents to the atmosphere even when on recirculating, the systems are designed to constantly bring fresh air on and off and are constantly being controlled by A/C computer systems, If you knew anything about a/c control systems you would know this.

Thanks! I usually only turn it on if a car or truck with horrible exhaust is in front of me, but I’ll be more aware now for sure!

I’d rather breathe my own air than all the toxins and exhaust and chemicals on the highway

If I don’t turn that on, all I can smell is the exhaust from the other cars. What do you do in that case?

Don't masks do this a well? Been meaning to ask u for a long time now. Also, aren't asthmatic ppl not advised to wear masks as they cause resp distress. I have asthma & I get asthma attacks every time I put one on.

If your interior was sealed so tight that recirculating the air makes you feel that way. Then if you close the door with the windows up the windows would explode

Most modern vehicles still allow small amounts of fresh air in and there are vents in back behind the bumper. But I guess if you have a pack car this could happen.

It takes about 40 minutes to get to 4000ppm from a person exhaling in a car with recirculating. 5000ppm shows symptoms. 40,000 is danger. I pulled up a paper to confirm what the doc is saying

when I'm driving through a city, the outside air is like 99% smoke from the other cars, recirculating will kill me in an hour, not recirculating will kill me Immediately

That actually filters the air through an in cabin air filter. The filter is usually behind the glovebox. Next time when the service write asked if you want to change it. I would recommend that you do.

That’s a stretch, your car is not sealed that tight. And most of us get out to stretch legs, eat or use the bathroom.
