Technically, isn't Sans employed? His illegal hotdog stand, and when you first meet him, doesn't he say he's out for a watch of Humans? So he's associated with the Royal guard, but isn't technically in it. I mean, he isn't putting it seriously to what he's trying to do, work, but he's distracting himself from the timelines and saves, so I guess it counts? And in the Papyrus ending, in when Papyrus is the one who gets to be the Monarch, Papyrus says that Sans is the one doing the paperwork, and is actually working hard, so meaning to say, Sans can actually work hard and use his intelligence, but due to his slight lack of motivation to anything, hence why he's called "Lazy" by his brother, Papyrus, he doesn't do much, unless things that entertain him like doing pranks and puns, as that doesn't take a lot of energy to do besides thinking puns on the spot, which signs his intelligence, words smarts. He is also signed to had have an interest and science, being a close friend with Alphys, seen in the Pacifist ending, so he may or may not have been a scientist in the past, but only for a short time, or maybe it's because he can go through time and space, thus why he was associated with Alphys in the past. My theory, atleast. [yummy]
