3 of my 4 players showed up for first session, one had to leave super early, later on it threw 3 goblins at them, the Sorcerer almost died and the fighter kept not quite killing them

i mean ... sometimes the book itself is wrong. I've thrown cr14 creatures at my party who were level 5 and it was a breeze for them but later on they took on a band of cr5 at 14th and they were nearly tpked.

That’s not a homebrew issue, that’s a dm balancing issue. DMs SHOULD homebrew monsters frequently to keep players on their toes and to avoid metagaming.

Bro we fought a guy who’s second phase made him IMMUNE TO EVERYTHING BUT RADIANT AND PSYCHIC DAMAGE. the only sources of that we had was the Soulknife rogue and the Warlock’s radiant dagger😭 AND HE WAS ONE OF THREE PEOPLE WE FOUGHT IN THAT BATTLE. FIGHTER AND BARBARIAN WERE DOWN WHEN THE ROGUE MANAGED TO FINISH HIM OFF.

my 2 man team and a barbarian dmpc i use to balance it out at level 6 beat a bone devil but almost died to a cr3 velociraptor and a mimic. literally over 80 percent of their health gone but shat on the bone devil like what lol

So I've played with veteran players who have memorized statblocks, or will look them up if they can. Homebrew robs bad/meta gaming players of that option.

This was my party in the mini campaign I ran when they decided to fight the optional boss. It was a modified nightwalker made with/from corrupted energy from the world tree and was made to be a lower rank of beings made to be god killers 😈
