Hot Take: A “do-it-all” bass drum beater doesn't exist! I have not heard anyone talk about this and yet it is as important as finding the right pair of drumsticks. If you didn't know, a bass drum beater is a component of a bass drum pedal that strikes the bass drum head to produce sound. Very much like a generic drum key, most of the time we don't think about being specific with a beater and just use what comes with the pedal. Although, the beater plays a significant role in weight and feel when you play. For example, up until I have been using the Ahead Rubber Cube Felt beater. It's a great beater although it's not a light beater. With simple backbeat grooves, this beater is great, but if I wanted to do 16th note patterns it started to become more difficult. I realized this after I swapped that beater out for the @innovativepercussion KDB-4 Ronnie Vannucci Model Kick Drum Beater and it was so much easier to work in those 16th note patterns. This reminded me how important it is to pick the right beater for the situation and not just go with what you always use. It pushes us to be more intentional with our gear which will in turn help us serve the music the way it needs to be served. Making us freer to play instead of feeling limited by our gear.
