Yesss I had a little girl say “I’d love to be a bartender” and her mum, in front of me said “aim higher” 😅 I piped up to her, they wouldn’t have their fine dining, special cocktails and no dishes dinners without us!! It’s appalling

my housemate brought it up the other day that people always downgrade hospitality workers but they also don't understand we are the backbone to the i cant cook tonight or feeding the emergency service workers etc

I love the hospitality industry but I felt shame for so long about it and was always searching for something else. But I realise now at 33 I enjoy it so much!

Hospo is like no other. Hard, but amazing. And the vibe with other hospo workers, like a family. Others are jelly they missing out. 😜

@saxonwolfe: 100% even when you work hard to get yourself to “head barista” or “cafe manager” I always felt like “I had nothing under my belt”. I feel like it’s just seen as a low class job where you don’t have to use your brain or skills or anything. What got me through was making those connections with my customers, those special regulars and my team. And one special thing I was told by an elderly lady who was a regular where she said she comes in so she has someone to talk to, someone who would listen and give her the time of day even just for a few minutes. She lived on her own and a lot of the time she felt lonely but when she came in and talked to me she didn’t feel alone. Working in hospo sometimes you don’t realise how special you are to people and how your interaction with them can completely change their day for the better ❤️

no because at the end of the day, hospitality is one industry that celebrates the important days in people's lives, weddings, birthday's and everything between and it's not easy work, it's actually a lifestyle. And it's NZ best industry, because tourists say NZ is so friendly and amazing food

So many middle aged people congratulated me when I moved out of hospo for getting a “real” or “proper” job. I love hospo and genuinely miss the environment, was so much better than my “real” job

Personally, I'm always surprised that people choose to and enjoy working in hospitality, but that's because I had SUCH traumatic experiences in the hospo industry

I worked hospo for my gap year and I got a lot of negative comments from people! But that year gave me so many important skills that enabled me to do so well at uni. I have SO much respect for people who work hospo. Good luck for the awards xx

Definitely feel like it is still judged - I did hospo for 6 years after my degree then changed to call centre customer service and both have the same level of “you’re too overqualified to be in cust service” judgement I’ve found. It sucks cause if the person likes what they’re doing why does it concern anyone else? I do miss hospo tho - wish I could go back somedays 😅

💯 I feel that and think maybe that’s why I left the industry and that makes me feel kinda sad!

I worked in hospo for 25 years and it was very rewarding.. I actually genuinely loved it. But after covid the dynamic changed and people became more demanding. I found it very tiring trying to keep up with all the ridiculous demands and people treating me like a servant. I only left in January to pursue other interests but I will always be kind and non aggressive and non demanding to hospo teams. They make the world continue to spin. Love your mahi xx

People also seem to hate farmers yet that's where it all starts from milk to grain to meat 🤠

I will never forget the time we worked a Christmas function in our food truck and at the end as we were saying goodbye and thank you, the owner of the business asked “do you have real jobs…” Our food truck turned into a restaurant after 2 years in business (during covid) and we’re now almost 6 years into food trucking. She now brings here family and friends into the restaurant so I guess our “real jobs” did okay hey 🙈🫠

huge respect for hospo workers - i worked in a couple of hospo jobs when I was at uni and it can be so physically and mentally exhausting. there's such a weird perception in nz that it can't or shouldn't be a "real" career, despite being so important to our lives! Part of the problem might be that some hospo businesses treat their workers pretty badly - low pay, unreliable hours etc

Some of us work at a hospo business as a pathway to another, and some as a full time gig. Either way, it’s cool! Getting to know regulars, or people passing by. There’s nothing like hospo team work 🤩 congratulations to you and Emma xx

Also.. you’ve achieved so much for your age and you should definitely be proud of yourself. You put the mahi in which not many people can keep up with. I would totally recommend doing hospo, it’s a very real occupation. I’m just getting creaky. Good luck with tomorrow.
