What happened to the 12 human rights activists was not a legal arrest or detention. It happened outside a clear legal framework, did not respect their rights, gave them no access to a lawyer or court, and broke international human rights laws. The ship was stopped in the exclusive economic zone — which is part of international waters — where, under maritime law, civilian ships are protected as long as they are not doing anything illegal. Israel says it acted because of a naval blockade, but under international law, peaceful aid ships cannot be stopped or detained without a valid legal reason. The activists are being held without charges, without a lawyer, and without a fair legal process. This is called unlawful abduction under international law. It is not exactly the same as kidnapping in legal terms, but it is just as serious and in colloquial language it means the same as kidnapping — it is the illegal and unjust detention of civilians by a state.
