If they’re trying to teach the kid to have a HEALTHY relationship with food and not a distorted, diet-obsessed one, they could offer her a small scoop too. Teach the kid that small treats are perfectly ok and part of a balanced diet. Let her learn about proper portion sizes and moderation.

Or mom and dad could let her have a spoonful at auntie’s house only. My kids ate and did stuff at their grandparents and aunts homes that weren’t allowed at ours. It was part of the fun to visit.

I’m so tired of parents thinking it’s everyone else’s responsibility to make their job as a parent easier or nonexistent

it’s just a little treat for the OP. it’s like eating a cookie or a small handful of m&ms or whatever. SIL should tell her kid “it’s sometimes food for kids, auntie is an adult and we’re in her home.” or maybe ask to have a cone together before they leave.

He/She is grown. He/She is not a parent. He/She doesn’t need to cater to any child in THEIR house lol.

She shoukd keep her daughter in her room while your eating the ice cream. You are trying to compromise in your own home

"your aunt is an adult, when you're an adult you can choose what and when you eat too." easy.

Adults get to make their own health decisions and you are not an adult yet. That’s that. She’ll have a tantrum for sure but that’s why kids do and your job as a parent is to help her work through those frustrated feelings. And CHRIST the excuses and blind eye we have to alcohol 🙄 your alcohol is worse than the ice cream. Just that your daughter does not want the wine (YET) so it’s not challenging you as a person yet.

Just give the kid an icecream, too. You are on your jolidays, so that counts for sometimes.

yes. as an adult you have responsibility towards kids. if the parents tell the kid not to eat icecream every day, but that kid exactly sees a close family member do, so obviously wonders why can't he/she do if aunt/uncle does the same...?

my daughter is 6, and if we explained to her, she would understand. if you're upfront and honest with your children, they will understand why are things the way they are. if you're not into that, you get a curious child WHICH IS BTW NORMAL, the drama being made is by the parent being dishonest to "avoid" drama, not realising that just creates more discomfort and confusion with their child.

This is the opposite of teaching her to have a healthy relationship with Food. And it sounds like they just need to get a hotel.

They are welcome to leave the house and stay somewhere else for the next couple of weeks. That solves everything pretty easily.
