@nytimes: The app Yuka, which Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the U.S. health secretary, has called “invaluable,” assigns health scores to food. But can it actually help people make better choices? Caroline Hopkins Legaspi, a reporter for Well, explains. Video by Caroline Hopkins Legaspi and Theodore Tae/The New York Times #Yuka #YukaApp

I work in beauty, and people use this to scan skincare products to see what is “good” for their skin. It’s extremely frustrating to try and educate someone on, yes that product does have chemicals in it, but those are also chemicals that are naturally. But all they care about is the rating on the app

it's a European app. they give organic products 10 points. green washing and selling organic. organic shows no evidence of being better. correlation not causation. peeps that buy organic tend to be healthy conscious and do many things to benefit their health. hard to pinpoint organics. anti chemistry and fear mongering app to sow distrust in institutions

But it’s better than nothing. The app can improve! I believe her suggestions about the different types of sugars can be an update of some sort, but by giving Americans a started to choose healthier items is good for us.

I’ve been using this for the past few years and feel it’s a good product that does scan more than just food. I use it on other products like lotoions, soaps, and shampoo to help identify any potential allergens or harmful ingredients that I am not educated on. And for food you don’t have to take its score as an ultimate deciding factor but as with the topical ingredients it’s good to know about the ones you may not be aware of that your ingesting and their potential harms.

What is the purpose of this reporting? The app is useful in its purpose. Instead of criticizing it because it can’t do every single thing perfectly what does the NYT proposes to do? Giving consumers immediate insights on products is considered pretty good for me

You can disagree with RFK and support organic foods and regenerative agriculture. It’s crazy some are saying oh no RFK likes it I hate it. You guys are literally on the side of big plastic and big food corporations

Their privacy policy shows they share certain personal info with other entities without really making clear why. Remember kids, if something is free, you’re the product being sold.

I think it’s pretty clear a bag of Cheetos rates pretty bad and everyone knows that. With all tech technologies, take it with a grain of salt.

if you want an on-the-go food evaluator, use Fig. it's better to tailor what is important to your diet and not what's good/bad

I've been using it for 4 years and loving it since. It is just suggestive and yeah it may make mistakes, but it can give you general sense which types of food are bad for you so it helps!
