Huge red flag!. Does she also treat restaurant wait staff the same way?

It’s not rude. It doesn’t sound like mistreatment… they’re treating the staff like staff. Could they be nicer? Sure.. but.. it sounds like he’s uncomfortable with their lifestyle

This story reminds me of an episode of Downtown Abbey. When Mathew poured himself some tea and the family/staff got offended that he didn't wait for them to do it.

What’s wild is that people have no problem expecting their wives or mothers to cook, clean and host events (Thanksgiving anyone?) but paying people do those things is somehow AH behavior

I had that experience but with my previous boss. He invited me and the whole Team (with our client) to his house. I'm not a rich person so I wasn't used to that setup. It was super awkward when the servers had to stand near the dining table while we ate silently. There was even hair in my risotto, but I just tried to ignore it and continued eating as I didn't want the Chef (with the uniform) to get in trouble. I don't think they were being rude to the staff. I guess like me, OP is just not used to being served by people inside the house.

sorry but nobody was mistreated, the mom is right, that’s their job (they are being paid for it) the way that the staff was in the room is normal, so they can better assist, clearly some ppl are not used to this…

As someone that been the house staff & a guest. YTA. From his description, theyre no mistreating the staff. Just seems like a professional relationship and nothing more. Not everyone is besties with their house staff. Are they properly paid? Are they berated? From his account, it doesn't seem like theyre being abused.

NTA, I went to a bsr the other day and went and helped myself from the bar, because the bar staff were cutting up lemons, then I went into a restaurant for dinner, and went and cooked my own dinner in their kitchen, then I served myself in the actual restaurant and got the staff to sit down whilst I did it.
Then I stayed in a hotel, made the bed myself, then took the linens off the bed and washed them in the machine myself then ironed them once dry, then remade the bed. 🙄🙄🙄🙄

I've worked in houses with large staffs. We don't take any offense to doing our jobs. If anything, a GUEST telling us not to is more awkward. You wouldn't tell a housekeeper/chef on a vacation what to do. I understand him trying to be polite but we will try to ignore him and go through our regular routines.

it isn't rude. it's just a lifestyle different than your own.. let the staff do their jobs and say thank you. that's it.

It sounds like this person was just uncomfortable with a new experience. Those people were doing their JOB. Which includes things like cleaning bedroooms, making coffee, and being available to serve during a birthday dinner….Unless this person left out actually moments of being rude — all these examples are just people doing their jobs and employers asking that their staff do their jobs.

I’ve worked as a private nanny/housekeeper it doesn’t sound like anyone was being rude here tbh. Yes we’re paid to be there and do a job so that what we’re gonna do. This guy didn’t sound prepared for that he could’ve asked his gf more questions abt it or she could’ve just told him this is how it works. If he isn’t comfortable with their family dynamics then he can leave. But they didn’t sound rude they just sounded like people directing their house staff

No thanks :
NTA, but neither is the girlfriend. It is the housekeeper’s job to clean the bedrooms. She’s PAID to do it. Same with the kitchen staff. They are paid to do things kitchen related. On the flip side, the cooks could end up being insulted, thinking OP doesn’t like their coffee

i’ve lived in places where it was customary for staff to clean the house, cook food and prepare drinks, do laundry, etc. hell i’ve even lived in places where stuff helped me bathe if i was too tired or in too much pain. if that’s what they are paid for then no it’s not mistreating them. op is just uncomfortable with that lifestyle

I don’t see the mistreatment? They pay them directly to do their job, they’re not restaurant staff that have autonomy, they’re paid to do what they’re doing

YTA this is a cultural thing. You not being used to have service staff around you and not making an effort to join the dinamic is not your girlfriends problem. They are workers, they are getting paid, let them do their job. Service staff take pride on doing a great job, they train for that.

If they were actually mean to the staff, I’d agree, but unless I missed something, aside from tattling on the kitchen staff I don’t feel like they did anything wrong. It’s not like they said rude things to them or treated them poorly. It’s not rude to have them do the job they are employed to do. He’s just not comfortable having staff do things for him, in general. Honestly, he’s being judgemental of everyone, including the staff.

Hmm so rich ppl have house staff they pay to do the things they don’t want to do but you’re used to doing it yourself yet you getting mad at them for utilizing the staff for the purpose they were hired to do? You’re stoping them from doing their job buddy and they’re getting in trouble cuz their employers think they’re slacking 🙂↕️
