@jastinations: Fixins Soul Kitchen in Tulsa, OK really gave what it needed to give. Located at 222 N Detroit Ave, this Black-owned restaurant was everything I didn’t know I needed during my layover. Shoutout to the gentleman at the hotel front desk who told me I had to try the chicken and waffles—and he was absolutely right. I added a side of collard greens that were so flavorful it felt like they were made by somebody’s Auntie in the back. The sweet tea? Reminded me of being back home in South Carolina. And the red velvet cake was so good, I’m literally flying it back to Philly for my best friend to try. Yes, it’s that serious. From the second I walked in, I felt the vibe. The music, the decor, the artwork—all of it felt like a celebration of Black culture. It’s not just a restaurant, it’s an experience. And that’s what makes Fixins special. Moments like this are why I’m seriously thinking about dedicating more of my platform to highlighting Black-owned restaurants, especially brunch spots.
