the amount of times I tell people to learn chords is insane. Chords are hard but help w stretching fingers plus so many songs have the same 3-4 chords. And once you learn that, scales are just as fundamental too. Music theory by far though- i learned power chords before anything just by playing Green Day and Metallica and all that. But YES- VERY IMPORTANT to learn the basics. Once you learn scales, you can literally play with anyone/anything. 🔥

I've been playing guitar on and off since about 2016, I started with tabs then moved on to rocksmith 2014, I've never learned scales of bar chords (I did learn how to use my pinky though because of rocksmith) and I MAJORLY regret not learning those things first, I wanted to learn how to play Creep by Radiohead, but bar chords are KILLING me, and I can play the full into solo to One by Metallica (one of the first things I learned btw through brute force), there's no reason I shouldn't be able to play it but because I skimped on learning the basics it's harder than it should be

do you have any tips or useful exercises for getting better at strumming with a pick? i’ve been learning for about a year now and this is still the one thing i can’t wrap my head around. it’s either a) super loud or b) the pick gets caught in the strings on the up strums :’)

As much as I agree with starting with the “hard stuff”, its better for a beginner to start at a place where they wont be discouraged from continuing to pick up the guitar everyday.
