Eren feels a great sense of conflict and love towards Mikasa. He believes that her unwavering loyalty may not be entirely her own choice but something rooted in her Ackerman bloodline, a protective instinct she’s been forced to follow. This thought haunts him because he doesn’t want her to care for him out of some inherited duty. He wants it to be real. And yet, despite his coldness at times, Eren can’t deny how deeply he cares for her. Her presence has been one of the few constants in his life, a light in the middle of everything falling apart. When he looks at Mikasa, part of him sees the peaceful life he wishes he could have had, a life free from war, hatred, and destiny. He pushes her away not because he feels nothing, but because he feels too much. He’s terrified that the life he’s chosen will destroy the people he loves, and the more he loves Mikasa, the more he feels the need to protect her from himself. But even as he distances himself, he still hopes that one day, if there’s anything left of him or the world, they might find their way back to each other, not out of duty, but out of love freely chosen.
