In the 1950’s Detroit was the wealthiest in the WORLD. It’s insane to think about.

fact check:
Detroit had 1.9 million residents in 1950. First automation, and later the relocation of major car manufacturers to Mexico and Asia, led to a steady decline. By 2013, Detroit’s population had dropped to just 700,000. Despite massive financial support from politicians, the exodus of companies could not be stopped. In 2013, the city had to file for bankruptcy. It wasn’t until 2023 that Detroit reported population growth again for the first time.

The government doomed Detroit by allowing car makers from foreign countries to compete here with minimal protections to our manufacturers.

The irony is that Detroit and the surrounding areas produced most of the vehicles, bomber airplanes, and other materials that won WW II, then ironically, after the war it lost its automotive industry mostly to the two countries (Germany and Japan) we fought in the war, and then helped rebuild through the Marshall Plan in the years after the war.

I grew up in Michigan. It’s sad to know our state history and see where it is now. All the jobs left and it hasn’t gotten any better for yearssss

Detroit’s decline resulted from a convergence of factors, including deindustrialization, systemic racial inequality, political corruption, and long-term structural neglect. The city ultimately became a casualty of an economic model that proved unable to adjust to the demands of an increasingly globalized economy.
