calling in sick to my last job had me on the verge of a panic attack. I was sent home yesterday sick and when I called in this morning my boss said "take care of yourself, love" my job now is so much better ♡

I just experienced this but as the manager, one of my people had no idea it was ok to do life around work and not stress it. It’s sad it was surprising to this person that I don’t micromanage.

When I was working in Germany I had a medical issue that ended up needing surgery. When I called out sick the first time my boss didn’t respond and so when I needed to do it a second day and apologized. She finally said I don’t want to seem rude but I don’t care why you’re out, if you’re sick you’re sick that is what the sick time is for! That’s when I realized how much the US trains us to feel bad when we are sick!

I had the opposite - I told my boss I’d log in from hospital to get the work done. I was firmly told that if I did that then my computer access would be revoked until she could trust me to look after myself 😂

I had a boss once who asked me to submit 4 hrs of PTO (we had to use it in blocks of 4 hrs) because I was gone for more than 2 hours at a doctor’s appointment. I had just found out that I needed a hysterectomy and that it was likely I had cancerous cells in my uterus. I had gone back to work after that news because I had a deadline and felt that I had to. I am now a manager of 12 people and I strive every day to be the opposite of that boss.

I always find it so strange that you have to give up your own vacation hours for doctor's appointments, here in the Netherlands that is absolutely not the case, here you even get 2 hours off without giving anything in return, that is legally arranged, you don't even have to officially say what exactly you are going to do, a boss can ask for a doctor's note but officially you just get 2 hours off for it. If you are sick you just report sick, no one owes you an explanation, if you are sick for a long time you can go on sick leave, then you just get your salary paid, you can do this for 2 years, after that a boss can fire you. But it is arranged a lot better here if I read it all like this.

I swear it's like ptsd. in 2016, I broke 4 ribs and 1 clavicle and my boss called me everyday for 1 month asking if I could come in anyway

It's baffling. I had NOOOOO idea this is how life could be. For about 10 years. I couldn't even go home after having to go to the ER and get an emergency small operation. Wasn't a big deal, but I could barely walk and was highly sedated just to get picked up by a coworker and work. And to work a long night since I was gone for 5 hours.

I have had horrific ptsd/anxiety at my new boss, and I made it past probation and she loves me immensely, but I still get flashbacks to prior bosses 😭 it'll get better

German law takes it one step further: if you can't book an appointment outside work schedule, you're free to go anyway and don't have to shift anything. It's basically the company's problem 🤷♀️

Yep they got mad at me for having emergency gallbladder surgery. I even worked a 8hr shift in the worst pain of my life because I was scared of being in trouble.
