According to police, Alvarado punched her, stran*led her with a shirt, suffo*ated her with a pillow, and threatened to unalive her — all while their children, including a toddler, were present in the home. He also took her phone to prevent her from calling for help. The next morning, desperate and injured, Veronica wrote a note pleading for help and gave it to her children, instructing them to hand it to their school bus driver.
