@deep_chillz: Genie Wiley’s life is one of the most chilling examples of child abuse and social isolation in modern American history. Born in 1957, she was kept locked away by her father, Clark Wiley, for over a decade in a small, dimly lit room of their home. From infancy, she was denied nearly all human interaction. He bound her to a potty chair for hours, often overnight, with her arms and legs immobilized. She was not spoken to—only barked at or growled at by her father, who believed he was protecting her from what he saw as a corrupt and dangerous world. In reality, he was subjecting her to an extreme form of isolation that left her physically underdeveloped and nearly mute by the time she was discovered at age 13. Clark Wiley ruled the household through terror, silencing both Genie’s mother and older brother. Anyone who disobeyed his strict orders faced violent repercussions. When authorities finally intervened in 1970, after Genie’s mother fled with the child, what they uncovered horrified them: a girl who walked awkwardly, couldn’t chew solid food, and had the language abilities of an infant. The discovery shocked the nation and led to an intense scientific and ethical debate about nature vs. nurture. Tragically, Genie became not only a symbol of resilience but also a victim of systemic failure once again, as legal battles and shifting custody arrangements disrupted her care after rescue. Her story remains a haunting reminder of the psychological scars caused by profound neglect—and of how even freedom can come too late. #deep_chillz #sad #justice #fyp #scary #foryoupage #disturbingfacts #disturbing #prayers

This case was terrible! The doctors and speech therapists intially helped but ultimately let their professional egos interfere due to the uniqueness of her case.

As someone who has been isolated to a much lesser degree and can see how truly horrifying it’s been to my mind, body, and soul over decades…I just can’t stomach this. Isolation has absolutely ruined me in every aspect, to my very core, and in turn ruined the external life I could have had outside of myself too…I’ve never really been a person, just an unseen ghost, roaming the earth in the same exact perimeters year after year, never escaping my own haunting, never escaping the fact that I’ve never really felt “alive”…and she never even truly got to have a life at all as far as I am concerned. If this is how I feel, I just can’t stomach thinking about her. That’s not a life. That’s such a nightmare. It’s not fair. It never ceases to rattle me how much worse someone else has had it, and is having it right now as I type this. I have never had it the worst, even at the worst of my worst. It’s unbelievable what humans do to each other. I don’t understand, I just don’t understand

Don’t see the mother as a victim in this scenario at all. She activity played a part in this child’s isolation

My elementary school GTE class did a case study on Genie, based on the documentary. I love my teacher for exposing us to this at a young age, teaching us compassion.

the part that really gets me is that she was living with one of the families who was working to help her for FOUR YEARS and finally was experiencing an ounce of “normalcy” just for her mother to sue them and have her ripped away :(

It truly messes me up how her whole situation played out with the doctors and people examining her. I truly hope she’s doing well. It’s horrific what she experienced and lived through.

I remember hearing that the only “stimulus” she had was an old yellow raincoat in her room. When she was rescued, she would react violently to other yellow items. 😞 so horrific.
