@_historyunveiled: 📜 The Siege of Jerusalem (70 CE) – Rome’s Destruction of the Holy City The Siege of Jerusalem in 70 CE was a pivotal event in the First Jewish–Roman War. ⚔️ The Roman army was led by future emperor Titus, son of Emperor Vespasian. 🛡️ The city was surrounded for months, with no food or outside contact. 🚫 Inside the walls, famine broke out — residents ate tree bark, leather, and even refuse. 🥀 According to historian Josephus, acts of cannibalism were even recorded. 😔 When Rome finally breached the city walls, Jerusalem was looted and set ablaze. 🔥 The Temple in Jerusalem, the heart of Jewish worship, was completely destroyed. 🏛️ Historical accounts estimate over 600,000 people died — most from starvation, not the sword. 🕯️ This tragedy remains etched in Jewish prayer and memory as a symbol of total destruction. ✡️ #historytok #ancienthistory #humansuffering #historicalevents #jewishhistory #realhistory

People ask when the region began to be called Palestine. In 70 CE, it was still known as Judea, a province of the Roman Empire. In 135 CE, there was a major Jewish revolt the "Bar Kokhba Revolt", but it failed... as a result the Romans crushed the uprising and renamed Judea to "Palestina." They also changed the name of Jerusalem to "Aelia Capitolina," banned Jews from the city, and many Jews fled to North Africa, Persia, and Europe.

They rather did this than move out and fight? No army at the time could stand 600 thousand angry people with any weapons.

Josephus wrote that the Jewish rebels who led Jerusalem were the ones who searched to find the source of the cooking smell, not the Romans.
