Ok I’m hooked!! 👇🏼 I have been wanting to make our own backpacking meals for a while now!! Don’t get me wrong- I LOVE the convenience of the pre packaged meal brands but eating them for multiple days in a row reeeeally upsets my stomach, which is ~not~ what you want on a multi day trip in the backcountry LOL So the idea of cooking my own nutrient dense, gut friendly meals for backpacking has been on my mind for a WHILE now. I’m not going to lie, I was really intimidated when I started researching dehydrators & freeze dryers. I didn’t realize there was such a big difference between the two! SO BASICALLY… A dehydrator uses heat to slowly dry out food. It’s a lot more affordable, compact, and beginner-friendly. While a freeze dryer first FREEZES the food and then uses a vacuum to such out the moisture. But the biggest difference is in the nutritional value of the final product. when dehydrating food, you lose half of the nutrients from the original meal, while freeze drying maintains all of the nutritional value! So freeze drying was the obvious choice for us!
