Gavin Newsom gave a televised address to the nation on Tuesday in the wake of ICE operations in Los Angeles that sparked days of protest in the city and the deployment there of hundreds of National Guard troops and U.S. Marines by President Trump. “What’s happening right now is very different than anything we’ve seen before. … Donald Trump, without consulting with California’s law enforcement leaders, commandeered 2,000 of our state’s National Guard members to deploy on our streets. Illegally, and for no reason,” Newsom said. “…California may be first, but it clearly won’t end here. Other states are next.” Newsom said that California law enforcement has arrested more than 370 people and that those who “incite violence or destroy our communities, amid ongoing anti-ICE protests will be held accountable. The situation, he said, “was winding down and was concentrated in just a few square blocks downtown” when the National Guard members were deployed. California has sued the administration over its troop deployment decision and is seeking an emergency court order to stop the use of the military in law enforcement activities in L.A., Newsom said. “At this moment, we must all stand up and be held to a higher level of accountability,” Newsom said toward the end of his remarks. “If you exercise your First Amendment rights, please do so peacefully.” Pres. Trump responded in a post on his Truth Social platform Wednesday morning, saying, “The INCOMPETENT Governor of California was unable to provide protection in a timely manner when our Ice Officers, GREAT Patriots they are, were attacked by an out of control mob of agitators, troublemakers, and/or insurrectionists.
