the Grimm brother actually collected the mouth to mouth tales that were told between the people. The Theorie is that must of these tails are not meant as a fairytale but more as a lesson for kids.

You gotta remember that Grimm's brothers were anthropologists, philologists, folklorists and linguists, their goal wasn't to create the best stories for children or even find an "original" version but to write down and analyse existing folkloric stories of their time and region

Took a fairy tales class as an elective in college, and the book we used was amazing. Each unit was effectively "here's the fairy tale you know ... and here's the dozens of variants and relatives of the tale you know, all placed in their historical context."

fun fact, in college I wrote a paper for I think world civ talking about Rhodopis, Ye Xian, and Perreault's Cinderella, and how Perreault could have encountered the earlier stories for them to influence his version.

I had the baba yaga version where the Cinderella character gets a skull from the witch that burns her family to death then starts spinning wheat to gold and meets the prince... it was a weird one to be honest
