@ramsey.show: In this call from The Ramsey Show, concerned dad, David, had a problem with his daughter's figure skating fitting in their family's budget. John and Rachel discuss with him the danger of travel sports with families, and how they can prioritize what's important in their budget.
Former figure skater here. She should have been competing already by the age of 10. At this point just keep it local. I was an Olympic hopeful and had to quit at 17 due to recurring injuries. Only to find out in my mid twenties my parents ALWAYS had a 2nd mortgage to put me thru skating, and were never able to pay anything off because of me.

If you can’t afford your child to do a sport at top level, don’t introduce them to the sport in the first place.

My current partner did this w his kids. Paid whatever it took to put them on national sports teams. It bankrupted them and they divorced. None of his kids ever went pro and it all seemed so misguided.

the $1000 a month you spend now, is the $$$$ you will save from her not falling into the wrong crowd and dealing with things like drug addiction. for modern times, this is a critical age, the busier they are, the better.

I don’t know why now people are so against telling kids we don’t have the money we can’t afford to do this or that x

If you can’t afford to spend money on your child doing extracurricular activities then you shouldn’t have kids. Simple.

my daughter quit the middle of her senior year due to injury. I could've given her a down payment for a house.

As a single mom, I did this for my daughter, who is a fencer, we traveled the country and she did make it to World Cup and Div1 college. Quit junior year and transferred to state college. I don’t regret doing this for her, we saw a lot while we traveled, she was busy doing good things. She has a $50/h job while she is in school, teaching fencing. Yes over the years it cost a lot but not sorry for even a minute!

As a former figure skater, I fundraised so I could skate. Sold candy bars, washed cars, got a part time job, babysat. Have them help you get the money if they really want to do it.

I advised my (very intelligent and talented) daughter to go to community college where she could have everything paid for. She’s still kind of mad at me that we couldn’t even afford the state university. But I’m a single mom over here, and I still have to afford life into my retirement. I said no student loans until grad school. I hope she forgives me someday.

She’s 14? Time to get a job and help pay for it. At that age if I wanted anything I had to get a job and pay for it myself.

at 14, if she really wants to do this, she should pick up some work and make some contributions to the cost of it all

My cousin was a star hockey player, his middle class parents spent thousands on camps/coaches/special training, etc. Once my cousin got to college he was so burned out, that he basically dropped the sport and dropped out of school his freshman year. He hasn’t put on a pair of skates since. Sometimes these sports are too much.

Disagree. I paid a good amount of money for competitive cheerleading for my daughter. She grew up knowing what it’s like to be a part of a team. She cheered (exercised) 4 times a week. She managed her time w school work. She also stayed out of a lot of trouble because she was busy doing what she loved.

What happened to sponsorship? A lot of clubs should get sponsors for kids whose parents can’t afford this kind of spending.

Our daughter completed until she was 14. At that age, she finally realized her skills were not improving. We hired coaches, camp at the Olympic Cntr in Lake Placid, custom skates, seamstress for dresses, and plane tickets/hotels for competitions. It’s endless. If she loves skating, she should attach herself to a coach. Maybe she could learn to coach younger skaters in your area.
