the music in this song specifically is beautifully well-crafted. there may only be a few chords playing with the reverb like you mentioned but to me the repetition of these same chords is done to make us as the listener feel ethel’s longing. i think it works really well, when that first chord plays you can just sense the burden that comes with it, and at the end when it brings us back to it again it’s almost reminding us that this longing isnt going to waiver or break for ethel anytime soon. one of my favourite things about this song!

Love this series of deep dives- the bottles line is reference to southern tradition of hanging bottles in tree for passed loved ones (I believe)

“But God, I just hope you're doing fine out there, I just pray that you're alright.” Could imply he’s still alive or perhaps went missing as Ethel did?

Just a question are you making this into a YouTube video by any chance? A long term video of this deepening into the album would be 👌👌

Thank you for clarifying that the physical location of the house in Ethel’s lore is not actually in Nebraska! Rather, she’s imagining herself and Willoughby sharing a life and a home together far away from the Deep South. Makes so much more sense to me now. 🧡
