there's been incidents where phones were stolen then when tracked on find my website it shows in china, most likely it's been shipped there for parts.

Little contradiction though .. use a strap so they can’t grab it easily then it was but I advise give your phone as time one will step in to help

In order to claim from insurance they would usually ask for a police report so you can’t just claim I think. They will ask for a reference number that you’ve reported it.
